The Plant
Banksia Grandis, commonly known as the Bull Banksia, is a striking tree native to the south-west of Western Australia. Growing up to 15 metres tall, it produces large golden flower spikes that can reach 35 cm in length. The distinctive seed pods take around 24 months to mature and, because the tree continually produces new pods, Banksia Grandis is a highly renewable natural resource.
Sustainability
Harvesting of Banksia Grandis seed pods is strictly regulated by the Western Australian Department of Parks and Wildlife. Only naturally matured pods that have completed their lifecycle and released their seeds are collected. Each pod is carefully handpicked without damaging the tree or surrounding bushland, and no heavy machinery is used during harvesting.
Collectors are assigned designated harvesting areas, with only a small percentage of pods permitted to be gathered from any one location. Royalties paid on each pod contribute directly to forest management and conservation efforts, helping protect these unique ecosystems for future generations.
Craftsmanship
Once harvested, the seed pods are carefully transformed using traditional woodturning techniques. Each pod is cut, shaped on a lathe, hand-sanded, and finished with 100% Australian canola oil to enhance its natural beauty. The result is a unique handcrafted piece that showcases the remarkable patterns and character of the Banksia pod.
